Calgary's public transportation system has evolved significantly since its inception in 1909. Originally known as the Calgary Street Railway, the city introduced streetcar service with the first 12 streetcars catering to a population of 30,000. This marked a milestone in providing more efficient transportation for the growing community.
In 1946, the company underwent a name change to Calgary Transit System and began phasing out streetcars in favor of motor buses and electric trolley buses, offering a more adaptable mode of transport. The last streetcar ran in 1950 and is now preserved at Heritage Park as a testament to the city's history.
In 1972, the transit system assumed its current name, Calgary Transit, and launched the Blue Arrow, its first bus rapid transit (BRT) route. The Blue Arrow provided limited-stop express bus service, connecting the southwest and northeast corridors of the city, further enhancing Calgary's public transportation network.
